This laptop is not happy without some sort of separate partition
created by something called phdisk. can anyone direct me to a copy of
this? is there another work around?

I'd try the Toshiba support web site. There are dozens of versions of
phdisk.exe floating around, but to be useful it must be customized for the
power management features of the machine it is run on.

Tim -

Is this a message that you get at startup only? Does everything work
fine after that? Mine gives me a little red warning at startup about
running phdisk.exe - this happens when you have had the memory out or
have upgraded memory. What operating system are you running?
