Looking for Advice about hard drive upgrade

I've been lurking on this list for sometime, but this is my first
post. I've got a 40 ReplayTV(5040). I do not have the lifetime
subscription. I would like to upgrade the hard drive.

How big of a drive can it use? I'm resigned to the fact that I will
loose all of my shows. That's ok, I'll DVArchive them off before I
do the upgrade. My question is, am I better off using RTVPatch or
should I go to a site like http/rgb.cc/replaytv/ and download the
image from there? Is there a difference?

I'm leaning towards downloading the image. That way I don't have to
plug my ReplayTV hard drive into my PC. I just pull it out and put it
away. What do you think?

Note: My "full-time day job" is a computer technician. I have no
problem at all disassembling a PC. However I am a little nervous
about cracking the case on my RePlay. #1 because I don't want to kill
it by booting it up with a bad image (I know enough to not kill it via
static discharge) and #2, the exposed power supply makes me a little
nervous.

If anyone can offer any tips or pointers I would really appreciate it.

Get the biggest Maxtor you can afford/find and use RTVPatch to copy
your original drive. You won't lose anything, the process is simple
and takes fairly little time.

I'm don't know what the largest hard drive size is. Is your PC new
enough to not have a problem with the 137 GB barrier while installing the
image?

You must plug the new hard drive into your PC. Downloading the image
is fine but you need the RTVPatch software to install the image on the
new hard drive. The site you referenced above has the correct image
as the first entry under 50xx images (5040_530510190.zip) .
The second entry is the instructions on how to proceed assuming you
are using Win2K or WinXP.

As long as the power cord is disconnected from the wall while the
5040 case is open there is nothing to fear from the power supply.
(Just don't drop any metallic parts into it and leave them there.)

You may also want to try ordering the drive with the image already installed
on it. Supposedly http/www.replaytv.us/ does two low-level formats on the
drives they sell, installs the latest image for your model, and then lets it
run for 60 hours before shipping it. They sell up to 300 gig drives.

I've heard of RTVs using dual 160GB drives. I advise you get a drive with
fluid bearings to keep the upgrade quiet. I bought a 160GB Maxtor and I
don't hear anything but the power supply fan. Use RTVPatch 2.4, it's
straight forward. If your PC has Win 2K with SP2 or lower you have to set a
registry variable to allow drives larger than 137GB (see Knowledge Base
Article 305098). I hear WinXP needs SP1. Pay attention to both drive jumpers
in the PC and don't forget to put the new drive back to Cable Select before
you install it in the RTV.

I downloaded an image from the internet and used without problem.
I installed a 160gig drive, but you can use 250gig if you like.
I put the original drive away in storage incase I need it later.

No problem taking the case cover off.
The warranty "void" sticker is easily removed without being destroyed.
I left this "void" sticker off and put it in a small plastic container
in case I need it later on.

The only hickup was when I patched the image to the 160gig drive and
it did not show up as 160gig drive once it was placed in the replaytv.
Seems, if you rtvpatch the image to the drive "and" the drive is
connected using a "pci" slot adapter board then the image will not
show up properly as the full 160gig (as in my case) even though the
computer shows the harddrive to be fully used.

I had to re-image the harddrive after reconnecting the drive to the
computer's motherboard drive connector. This went without a hitch.
Just something to think about if you have a certain type of "pci" slot
harddrive adapter card connector.

I have a Promise ATA100 PCI adapter and I had no problem with a 250GB
Maxtor. In fact, I started out with RTVPatch on a different system,
which had ATA100 on the motherboard but used ATA66 drive cables and this
did not correctly recognize the drive capacity.

After that stuff everything went fine and I didn't lose any shows, and
now I have something like 80 hours at high quality.

BTW, some sites recommend doing a low level format on the drive. I did
this on the 250 after it was nice and hot (operating temperature inside
the ReplayTV box), and it took about 36 hours, so be forewarned.
