directv and tivo

Hello,

I recently had directv service installed with a directv branded
tivo/receiver. I love it. The season pass rocks! We also have another
stand alone receiver for our other TV. I was thinking of getting
another directv branded tivo/receiver to replace it but I would like to
be able to view programs I have recorded on my computer.

If I get a regular tivo that can be networked, can it interact with our
stand alone directv receiver to record from multiple channels or can it
only record from the channel the receiver is currently set to?

The standalone TiVo can only record what its tuner is set to.
By "its tuner", I mean either the built-in cable-ready tuner
or its dedicated external receiver.

You can share recordings afterwards, but cannot share scheduling.

You would need to hack the unit.

Thanks for the responses. That is what I suspected. I should have
signed up for cable.

The unit I have is a DirecTV DVR R-10. It has two usb ports on the back
but I gather from other posts in this group that it doesn't do
networking. Is this a hardware or software issue? I noticed that
PTV-Upgrade has a drive upgrade kit that will enable networking, but
the feedback on this group about this company is rather bad.

Also, from what I read it stores the video files in a database rather
than as files that can be easily copied. Can the OS on this unit be
replaced or patched to store the video as seperate files?

Software.

True, there are do-it yourself instructions that are cheaper, but
require more patience.

No, but a hacked Directivo can stream those objects out and you can
store them as files, which amounts to the same thing.
