Surge Protector Question ?

I just ordered a Samsung 50" DLP HLP5063W.The Circuit City rep recommended
an $80 surge protector to even out the fluctuations in current due to other
appliances running.Does this sound right or would a standard protector
suffice ? Thanks

If it's Monster brand, forget it. You can find something comparable. Get a
UPS that has enough VA to keep your equipment going for a couple of minutes.

Figure out the total wattage drawn by your components and convert that to
VA. Get something rated for about 50% over that figure. Take into
consideration any future components you may add (PVR, etc.)

I'd recommend the UPS, but you do have to be careful. The output of some
UPS's are more square or triangular then they sine Some electronic devices
don't like it. There isn't a great deal of differences between a $80 dollar
surge Vs. a 20 dollar surge. I would advice you that the UPS will be helpful
with brown outs and spikes, the surge will protect from spikes, but nothing
is guaranteed when lightening is the subject.............I've seen it simply
bypass multiple industrial voltage protection devices and smoke everything
else.

What I would do is contact both Trip-lite and APC and add up all of your TV,
DVD, VHS, Stereo, Cable/Sat. that would run while your watching TV, and add
about 50 % ((for future) more VA around 1K would be good) and let them make
a recommendation of which model would be most suitable
