Samsung HL-R6178W TV Guide

Question to those have experience with the Samsung HL-R6178W digital OTA
tuner, possibly other DLP TVs also apply.
Anyone know if the Samsung HL-R6178W TV Guide works for OTA digital
broadcasts? I have no cable, have no satellite. Samsung tech people said
the the TV Guide was derived from the local PBS analog channel. I called
PBS and they had no idea what I was talking about. They only provide a
guide for their members. Sounds like I was send on a left handed monkey
wrench search. No store locally has an antenna connected to any of their
HDTV sets to test the guide function and Samsung isn't much help either.
The native ATSC guide is very slow on my Samsung HCH551W and even slower
on my Samsung SIR-T150 set top box, it re-scans all channels for every
use which takes one minute or more for the SIR-T150.

The multipath reception for my HCH551W built in digital tuner is fair
and the SIR-T150 is much better; but neither is really exceptional. May
be a difficult question, but how good is the HL-R6178W digital tuner?

I've got cable and use a Silver Sensor for OTA HD and the TV Guide
works just fine on both. Do you have it set up to read "Air" as well
as "Cable" on your set up?

As far as the tuner is concerned, I'm beginning to have a few doubts
about it. Reception is nominal, but it sometimes locks up for a minute
or two and resets itself. While it is "thinking", you can't do
anything other than sit and wait.

Thanks for your reply do not have the HL-R6167W. I was looking into the
possibility of purchasing one in the future.

Indoor reception can be problematic and results in more frequent signal
drop outs then an outside mounted antenna; although there are
exceptions. I got get better reception from an indoor Radio Shack double
bow tie antenna mounted in the attic (about 30 feet above ground) then
from an outside 100 inch UHF yagi antenna mounted 15 feet above ground.
Most stations were 14 miles distant and two over 45 miles. As expected
though, the best reception was from the antenna mounted outside and
above the roof line about 40 feet above ground.


Reception failure generally results from three basic conditions:

1. Insufficient signal strength
2. Excessive multipath conditions.
3. Interference to the digital transmission. Typically caused by an
analog signal on the same channel.

The tuner design can effect all three conditions, but multipath
anomalies is the area where the most improvement is anticipated.

Many of these companies are hiring programmers based on whoever gives
the lowest "salary requirements". You get what you pay for.
