I don't see the market for this. It will record analog cable, but not
digital (and therefore not HD cable). It costs $700, which is a lot to pay
considering that the cable company will rent a box with 2 tuners that does
all of the cable tricks for $10 a month.

The only people who would be interested are those who get basic cable or
OTA, which I suspect is a relatively small group of HDTV/DVR users.

Looks like a nice unit, but a little pricey. (MSRP of $800 for 250GB &
$1K for the 500GB.) The other issue is that it uses the TV Guide On
Screen system (TVGOS) for scheduling.. Before anyone purchases one of
these, I would check to ensure the TVGOS is working to their
satisfaction. I use TVGOS with another manufacturer's HDR and there
are currently channel line-up problems & resets which prevent
reliable recording.. It is cool when it works.....

It does to those of us that live in the real world.

The CE industry uses the term "DVR" to describe devices that record on a
hard disk. The term "PVR" is used for more intelligent DVRs (smarter
searches, guide-based programming, learning capabilities, etc.), but the
line is not hard and fast.

If recording is done on a DVD disc (±R or ±RW), then the device is called
a "DVD recorder". A device that records on both a hard drive and DVD disc
is called a "DVR plus DVD recorder".

If recording is done on a video tape, then the device is called a "VCR" (as
in "D-VHS VCR").

This unit's not designed for satellite use.

Exactly what is this new standard? Pull the drive out and
plug it into a Linux system??? Connect a USB HD to one of
the USB ports? Add an Ethernet or Wi-Fi card somewhere?

I agree why spend 700 on this, when the cable company offers one with
two tuners,
plus this thing has no firewire

But the cable company system has no firewire, either. That's a major
flaw.
