I have been doing a lot of research on the internet trying to reach a
decision between these 2 TVs. I have made a few trips to BB and CC
stores to view these TVs and always find the Sony more crisp and richer
in picture quality than the samsung. (Not sure if they purposely set it
that way). But even after playing with the settings I could not make
the samsung comparable to the Sony. Although I had already made my mind
to get the Samsung DLP (reading how much better this technology is
compared to LCD on various sites and newsgroup) I'm still in a big
dilemma ? I have read almost all the reviews on circuitcity.com about
the Sony (everyone who got it raves about it) and am leaning towards
the sony. I will be using this TV primarily for watching movies in a
home theatre. In store, I havent been able to see the much talked about
"Screen door effect" and also the black levels seem quite dark
(comparable to what I saw on the dlp). Appreciate your 2 cents in this
matter.

Thanks

Are you the only in the family making the decision? If you have wife &
kids take them with you, let them watch the DLP Samsung and the LCD
Sony in the store for a while, have them bring a couple of their
favorite DVD's from home. You'll be surprised at what they find. My
wife saw rainbows in the DLP and my kids said the LCD was blurry at
times with their Beckham soccer DVD.

DLP - some people see rainbows, I don't but my wife did.
LCD - motion blur on fast action scenes.

Also, do you watch sports? Check out the LCD with fast action sports,
you might not like the motion blur.

If you're the only one making the decision, than pick the one that
gives you the best PQ. Over at the avsforums it's been reported that
the Samsung DLP 6167 has a soft PQ. Also, there are new Samsung 1080p
sets coming out this month (July), you may want to hold off until you
see them.

Thanks much for the quick feedback..
I have 2 questions

1) I've heard the HD programming looks great on the Sony but when you
connect a progressive scan DVD player, the picture is a little fuzzy
but this can be correct by getting an upconversion DVD player ? Is this
true ?

2) Also the brightness of the Song LCD tv depends on the external
lighting conditions of the room. For instance in the store (well lit)
the PQ looks really bright n sharp. In other words if I was watching
movies with the lights out (extremely low lit to pitch dark room) would
the picture appear very dim ?

Thanks
M

I can only see the "screen-door effect" on our Sony KDF-60XS955 if the
picture is all very light (like a big sky shot) and I really look for it.
(Sitting 12 or so feet away.) I think most people would never see it.

Actually, we have an upconversion DVD player but I do not remember ever
seeing anything but sharp DVD's, even before we got it. The set's own
upconversion engine is very good. Remember, DVD's themselves are just 480i.

I don't believe this is true. I think the TV appears brighter in a dark
room, just like any other TV set.

No. The picture on this TV is as bright as you want it. We watch movies with
only a 25 watt backlight behind the set. Very bright picture. Of course, you
can adjust it as bright or dim as you like. In the stores, the TV pictures
are bright because the salesmen adjust them to "vivid". That is too bright
for most people at home.
