Rectangular peg into square-ish hole?

Hello gang -

First time poster, oft-time reader.

I have a built-in entertainment center with a 35"x35" hole for a TV, or
a 38Wx35H hole if I take the doors off, which I am not adverse to doing.

The current TV is a 32" std def Panasonic that is serving me well, but
it is time for it to migrate to the bedroom.

To maintain the same 4x3 height, it looks like I want about a 38 or 40"
HDTV. I'm looking for one with a chassis width that will fit into that
35 (or 38) inch-wide hole, and that's been hard. 42" seems out of the
question, though I'd love to be shown differently.

The Panasonic sits there with its 6.1 complement of friends so I
1. Don't need TV speakers, or
2. Want detachable speakers, or
3. Want speakers on the bottom vice the sides.

Further, to maximize video real estate, I want as small a screen bezel
as I can get.

All technologies are acceptable, including tuner-less monitors, though I
lean toward CRT. That probably conflicts with "small bezel." I would
consider an off-brand, but I'd need selling. The 38" RCA has placed
itself out of the running. I want blacker-blacks over whiter-whites.

Can anybody provide recommendations suitable to the above, or to a
comprehensive website that I can peruse to mine the available options?

Thanks in advance,
Hash

Personally, I don't think one of the greatest features of HDTV -- the
big-screen presentation -- should be traded off because of furniture. If
you're going to go hi-def, go big screen, at least for your main TV. Go
50", anyway. 60" is preferable. Change the furniture to fit the TV, not
the other way around.

Figure it this way: if you plan to sit around the living room at night and
watch the furniture, then alter the TV to fit it. But if you plan to watch
the TV, alter the furniture.

I bit the bullet and purchased a 42" Samsung a year ago that wouldn't
fit in my entertainment center.

The entertainment center is now a big storage area in my living room.
Doesn't look half bad with the doors closed where the TV set used to be.
The old set quit working after ten years, prompting the replacement.

I missed your words "built-in", though, so perhaps your best approach is
indeed to find a smaller set.

Hi Mack -

I should have mentioned somewhere that this is for a room in the
smallest of the lower 48 states, not the largest! ;-)

The room will not support more than 42". And it's furniture only if you
feel custom built-in cabinetry (I did mention that) is furniture. I
don't. I can't put a 50" console in front of this craftmanship for
esthetics as well as floor space reasons.

It's certainly true that I lacked foresight when I had it done, but I'm
in no position now to buy a new TV AND a new wall.

However, this has been a useful drill nevertheless to articulate my
criteria. "Small bezel" has eliminated plasma and CRT units, and a 38"
base has eliminated DLP--they don't come that small per the DLP website.

So I'm looking for 38-40 inch LCDs--right at the top of their size range.

I've found two--the NEC LCD4000 and the Sharp 37 with speakers on the
bottom. Both have very close viewing height to my 32" 4x3 set, and both
squeeze into 38" wide.

The NEC they're listing at $7K and giving away at $5K on the street.
The Sharp is listed as "Call us."

Looks like that Panasonic is staying put for a while, barring other
input.

Thanks,
Hash.

Galley-

Thanks--that's a useful website. I made myself an Excel spreadsheet
that does the same thing, only graphically, after seeing their example.

Hi Bill -

Thanks for the input. I've found some compatible models size-wize (see
my post to Mack) but not price-wise. The built-in part is limiting, and
were I to do it today, I'd spec it differently.

Looks like I have to wait out the technology/price curve.

Hash, your problem with the TV cabinet is a fairly common one. People
brought or built the cabinet in the days of 4:3 TVs and in some cases,
the wife refuses to replace it (in the situation of a movable cabinet).

Since you have your own sound set, one possible solution is a
commercial flat screen monitor be it plasma or LCD. The commercial
monitors usually have narrow side bezels as they have no speakers or
optional attachable speakers which you could skip.

The Panasonic 37" ED TH-37PWD7UY plasma is 36.2" wide and is around
$1650 + shipping on-line. Unfortunately the current 42" ED and HD 7UY
models are too wide at 40.2". The 8UY models reportedly will have
thinner side bezels, but the exact dimensions have not released, AFAIK.
When/if Panny will ship a 37" HD 8UY commercial version beyond sometime
later this year, I also don't know.

LCDs currently tend to come in at 37" - Sharp, Panny, Sony - with only
a few models at 40" - Samsung and NEC are it I think. But if you want
the best screen quality, the Samsung's black levels may not be
acceptable to you. Your best bet in the LCD category, given your need
for narrow side bezels is the 37" Sharp Aquos as Sharp goes for narrow
bezels while most LCD brands do not.

Thanks for the inputs. In reviewing the matter closely, I found that
there was 1" available behind each side of the door frame. So if I can
angle the set in there, and at 4inches set depth I think I should be
able to, I'll have a 40" wide space behind a 38" wide opening when I
take the doors off, which I clearly am going to do.

This should give me a few more options. Thanks again for the insights.
I went and saw a 37" Aquos today. It had fixed side speakers, but they
could get the bottom side sets easily enough. It was reduced to $4k.

I may still be waiting ;-)

Can't you get a 36" CRT HDTV? Seems to me if you are OK with 38", you may
as well go a little smaller. I understand the CRT-HD looks really nice.
Since you are not in Texas, you could do that.

Sharp has another 37" Aquos (GDU?) that has the speakers on the bottom. That
would probably be a better fit. Check Nextag.com, and you can find it in the
$3k range.
