Mac Word doc to PC Word 2002 formatting headache

When I open documents formatted in Word for Mac on a PC using Word 2002, the document has little boxes, some kind of formatting mark throughout the text. Is there a way to search and delete them?

I don't know what the sub-category "Office means....Thanks for any help!

It's an encoding error.

You could try cutting and pasting the block into find & replace to see if that would work.

But back in 2002, nobody liked Macs and MS support sucked (wait, there's an MS Office 2002 for Mac??). So if you're going to be doing this regularly I'd recommend upgrading or switching to something like Libre.
