Photoshop and HP DV7 Quad Core

I have an HP DV7 6199US. It has an Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor 2.20 GHz, and 8GB of Ram. I bought it so that I could do Photoshop faster than on my Old Compaq Athlon XP. But since I have first opened it on this machine, Photoshop CRAWLS. What could be wrong?? Simple filters take several seconds to load, brushes used take several seconds to show their effects. The whole program just takes forever. I spent $1,100 to run Photoshop faster, not the same way it worked on an Athlon XP.

Please help. I am lost.

You could have stopped there ;)

So, you have a version which supports multiple CPU cores, but as I said before, some filters will take advantage of those extra cores and others will only use one.

The only other issue I see is your video: the Intel HD Graphics is VERY slow and will not help speed up effects.

Also, to be clear, that CPU only has 4 cores, but with the Hyper-Threading enabled it looks like 8 cores to Windows.

My problem Phil, is that I was running this version of PS on a Dual Core Compaq with quite comparable performance/ And I am not a super advanced PS user that uses extensive filters and masks and scripts, I have pretty basic Photoshop work that I do, basic edits and never on files any larger than 15MB either, So its not like I am a pro photographer using RAW files with heavy edits.

Are there any known problems with Quad Cores and PS 12? What can do to improve performance?

A couple of comments:

Unless your Compaq is a workstation with XP 64-bit installed, then you are running PS 32-bit on XP and PS 64-bit on the HP. A 64-bit program on a 64-bit OS allows you to access more memory, but some operations can be slower than a 32-bit program on a 32-bit OS.

If you are mostly using filters that only use a single core, then your performance is greatly determined by the CPU clock speed, and also by the type of CPU. What is the CPU on the Compaq?

The HP is a laptop, so if it has a conventional hard drive accessing the PS 'scratch volumes' (like virtual memory on the hard drive) will be much slower than on a typical desktop.
