I found out why. One of a number of confirmations but this one in the
form of an email.

Bob Miller

Dear Bob Miller,

The price of the 5th generation VSB chip is almost same as that of the
4th generation. Furthermore VSB portion is a little of a material
cost of STB. Major portion come from HD decoder/CPU chip and can-type tuner.

The STB business division of LGE launched a few STB models in the USA
market but they retreated from the STB busniess due to little profit.

I will do my every best to help XXXXXXXXX or any manufacturers providing
STB to you using our 5th generation VSB chip enhancing the reception
performance of their STB.

Best regards.

So LG will be making the 5th chips, but not the boxes. I don't care
who makes the boxes, just get them out there for people to buy and make
them so they work! Micronas says they will sell their new ghost
merging tuner chip (use to be known as the Linx Casper chip) the second
half of this year, so we should have a selection of better products to
chose from.

I hope Bob Miller continues to test new tuner boxes and report to us on
their quality. I also hope Bob learns to keep his opinions about COFDM
to himself. It's never to late to grow up.

Who cares if LG sells the boxes or licenses the technology. Did you
really expect the 5th gen STBs to appear over night? For most vendors
4th gen and 5th gen doesn't make that big of difference... while the
cost may be "almost the same", even the slightest margin is important
to manufactuers. Combine this tib-bit with a largely uneducated
customer base and it's easy to see why the demand probably isn't there.

This supposed e-mail from LG is probably in response to your constant
thrashing of LG trying to make them produce an answer,

So you think LG does not owe its customers an answer? For years LG and
others have made big bucks selling "HDTV ready" sets that have no tuner
built in. They say buy it now and we will sell you a tuner later. Now
HDTV is available in most areas and people need tuners, and now they
say they will not sell us their best design that works in difficult
indoor situations? That is not good business ethics! LG should sell
the tuner itself. It is a bad business decision as well, as tuners
will become more popular automatically if they work better. A cut-off
date is likely coming soon. Every business decision should not be made
on the basis of immediate profit margins.

I am not thrashing anyone. The people I have talked to and who have
visited us in New York have all been great. I truly think that if LG
just dropped 8-VSB altogether and went over to COFDM they themselves
would be far better off. I know they are working hard to make 8-VSB
better and more like COFDM but why? COFDM already exist, use it.

And they seem to be doing just that. They make COFDM HD receivers for OZ
a market of 7 million homes and they don't make, or at least this email
says, they are retreating from the OTA STB market in the US of 109
million homes. You can't make this stuff up.

No, but most are. You can't force companies to produce or force stores
to stock something that doesn't make money.

Most people get HDTV via cable or satellite, so the market just *isn't
there* for standalone HD STBs. The small market of early adopters
(that need standalone HD tuners) will begin shrinking even more as the
tuner mandate is phased in. And big box stores that sell STBs are
only interested in selling something with a subscription.
