If my TV manual states it supports 480p and 1080i, does it also support
720p?

Just to add to what others have said, it depends on your set. Many
HDTVs sold today will accept both 1080i and 720p input and then convert
that to the sets native format. If that's what you mean by support the
answer is probably yes. Since your owners manual doesn't state 720p
input is supported you may have to contact the vendors support line to
find the true answer. If the answer turns out to be 720p input isn't
supported you still have options. Almost cable and sat boxes I've seen
to offer selectable 720p or 1080i output, so there probably won't be
much impact.

The 480p support is pretty common o 1080i sets, mine has a button on
the remote that allows me to toggle between 1080i and 540p Anything
progress scan is going to give you smoother action, I typically use
540p setting when playing video games.

Not always. The manual with my Panasonic states specifically that it does
not support 720p.

As Bill Clinton would say, " it all depends on what 'support' means".
It will "support" 720p by upconverting it to 1080i. It will not show it as
720p however.

The Panasonic 4:3 CRT rear projection set I bought in 2002 accepted
1080i, 480p, and 480i input; it choked on 720p input. So, I set my
receiver to output 1080i for HD broadcasts and 480p for standard
broadcasts.

What brand and model number of TV do you have ??

That's kinda important to know because some brands or models will
input and upconvert 720p, but others will not input it or upconvert it
at all like Panny Tube and Plasma TVs for instance.

The manual for my Panny 32" tube only indicates 480p and 1080i and
doesn't mention 720p anywhere. If i feed the TV a 720p signal from
my HD DVR (KABC-DT or FOX-DT or ESPN-HD) all i get is a black screen.
So i just deselect 720p in my HD box's output format menu and the
box upconverts it to 1080i so the TV can display it.
