Hello,

I was trying to create an archive of my dvds as images on my backup hard disk. Because of legal issues, I leave the image as its (not circumventing copy protections). This can often be done as block by block copy (e.g. with MagicISO or dd). However, some dvds are mastered with lots of invalid blocks. Standard I/O read operations retry on bad blocks and it takes literally days to copy.

Does anyone know of "standard" software to minimize the retry cycle (the atapi defines commands to read without retry). Otherwise, I would have to write it on my own and dig in the sources (of hdparm for example) not to start from scratch. And I'd need to postpone the backup project, since I guess it would take some time to program.

Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you!
