Can you get HDTV reception from analog cable ?

I have Time Warner on Staten Island, NY,
and I have analog cable subscription.
If I get an HDTV, must I upgrade to digital cable,
or can I get HDTV from the analog cable box?
Approximately how much is the digital cable
subscription?

You have a few options to Get HDTV.......

Buy a HDTV that has Both a QAM (Cable) Digital Tuner & ASTC
OTA (Over the Air Antenna) Digital Tuner....

Rent a Time Warner SA3250HD Cable Box&Remote for $7/mo....
and ask for the Local HD Package (free) and/or
the HD 'Theater' package of ESPN-HD, INHD & INHD2,
HD-NET, and HD-Movie for $8/mo....

OR a VERY! ruff way to get QAM Cable unencrypted SD& HD is a
via Samsung ($249) Digital OTA Tuner T-451...
THere are few QAM unencrypted HD Cable Channels Available!!!!
Messy!

OR just get the 7 OTA major Networks in NY via No Cable...
using Channel Master 3021 4 bay bow tie antenna ($25) 'indoors'
with a Samsung T-451 Digital Tuner ($249) & RG-6 dual shielded
antenna Cable.......

I have the T-451 that I use for OTA.

For fun, I scanned the cable, and found nothing.

HD channels are available on my cable system, but
they are on channels in the 700-800 range, which
I can't tune the T-451 to.

Am I missing something? Is there anyway to tune
channels that high with the T-451?

Using a Samsung T-451 QAM Cable & ASTC Digital Tuner.....

1) Determine all your Local OTA Digital 'Network' Channels
by scanning in the OTA option via T-451....
Manually convert those 'false' Channel IDs (like 2-1 to 23 etc) to
the Correct 'actual' Digital channel numbers on paper.....

2) Disconnect the OTA antenna cable from the T-451 RF Port
and then attach the Cable line to the T-451 RF Port..

3) Use the T-451 channel scan in the STD, HRC(Harmonic), and/or
IRC(Incremental) QAM Cable scan....
These TERMS represent preset Cable Frequencies in QAM....
The T-451 tuner will only uncover 'some' of the Digital
unencrypted QAM Cable channels..

4) The QAM Cable scan offers Cable Channels from 80-1 to 125-1
that includes 80-1, 80-2,80-3,80-4,80-5,80-6, 80-7, 80-8 etc..

THe process is slow and STD scan will find Cable channels not
found in HRC scan group...?? THere are relatively few
unencrypted Digital Channels on a modern Cable system...

The type of QAM Cable channels found are both Digital HD & Digital
SD....
and a bunch of my Local QAM HDs It could not find....
Very, very few people know their QAM unencrypted Channel ID's...
I've really never seen this QAM Info published on this News
Group...

5) A STD scan plus a HRC scan wipes out the T-451 STD chan info..
messy.
A following IRC scan wipes out the previous HRC scan...
So a lot of QAM chan writing is required to document QAM
channels.

6) Now the Messy T-451 kickers....
You can only have 1 RF Cable attached to the T-451 Port at any
time..
Pick the OTA antenna or QAM Cable....

As for manual Chan ID Entry on the remote....
Most, not all, OTA Digital channels can be enter & stored
manually..
To view, you need the OTA RF Port (antenna attached)..
For the QAM Cable Channels Input, None can be Entered
Manually.

7) In summary... The T-451 will let you view and Identify some QAM
Cable
unencrypted CHannel ID's at the expense of 'unable to view' the OTA
channels.

The digital channel numbers are actually probably somewhere in the 81
to 110 or so range. The channel numbers you see on the set top box are
remapped from the channels which are in 6 Mhz steps. Cable compresses SD
digital to fit multiple channels - up to 13 IIRC - or 2 HD channels in a
single 6 Mhz 256 QAM digital signal. The sub channels then get remapped
to the 81 to 800 or whatever channel you see. The analog channels for
customers who still use their cable ready TV are in the channel 2 to 79
(?) range with 1 SD channel per 6 MHz and take up the bulk of the
available bandwidth of the cable system.

I tried my SIR T-451 on my Comcast system just for the heck. It found
digital channels, but could not display any of them. Did not spend any
more time figuring what else I needed to do.

Dennis -- thank you for your detailed reply. I saved it away, and
just got around to testing my T-451.

My cable system has 4 non-premium HD channels. I was able to
tune two of them with the T-451. They were in the 81.* subchannels.

On the other hand, I get 10-12 OTA channels with the T-451. I guess
I'll just have to wait for the cable company to add more.

I sub to Charter for BASIC cable only and connect the cable to my Sharp 37 inch HDTV ready unit. Using SETUP, with STD scan while selecting CABLE/ANTENNA option. The tv scans analog first and finds channels 1 thru 31. Next digital scan starts right after and gets
some of the OTA digital channels(about 15) such as 2.1,4.1, 4.2, 4.4, 5.1, 5.2, etc. Digital lumps another 20 other channels into channel 0 that I access by moving channel up or down. These 20 include most local digital stations plus some from the EXTENDED cable list.
I also find another 10 scattered from 67 to 99 such as Disney, History ch, Animal Planet,
Cspan 1 & 2. Above 99, I find HBO 1 and 2, chinese channel, Amer Classic channel, and on rotating basis, 5 or six more from the EXTENDED channels. All this for $19.99.

My 20 inch SHARP in the bedroom with the cable plugged directly getS EXTREMELY
crystal clear all from 1 thru 31 that are shown by Charter as BASIC cable plus ch 99
which carries CSPAN.

Charter re-organized their channel line-up mid Jan and I lost the ESPN Sports channels plus USA and others that are now spanish/chinese stuff.

Uhh...how does that help? You're just telling us what channels you get. Doesn't help anyone else - you just say what brand tv's you have (not even models) and the cable company, and some channels. How does that help anyone else?
