Looking for a Virus Scanner that doesn't hijack computer

Hello,

I'm looking for a virus scanner that doesn't hi-jack my computer.

I'm a power user and don't need the scanner constantly running, showing me pop-ups, blocking traffic, hogging processor time.

I'm really hoping there is a lightweight scanner that I can install and it doesn't constantly run in the background. One I could select certain files to scan.
