s-video or component?

I have my component wiring going to my tv tuner for hdtv. I also have on my
reciever a s-video output, and on my vcr an s-video input. Because of the
component connection, could I enter a cable to the s-vid of that receiver to my
vcr's input? I read somewhere not to use both, but one is going to a tv and the
other would be going to my vcr, which also are connected to a splitter which
has connections via RF. I thought it was prohibitive to use rf and video cables
anyway, but how else can one make certain connections via a splitter?

depends on the receiver - some turn off the composite and S-video outputs
when either the component video or DVI/HDMI is being used, some don't

My Funai HD receiver leaves everything on all the time.

Depends on the box. My Hughes Directv/Over the Air box will pass either
1080i to the
component outputs ONLY, or standard video to the RF modulator Channel 3
output, video output, and s-video
output all at the same time.
