LCD, DLP...in another week or 2 I'll need LSD !! I think I'm burnt out
looking at HDTV sets and I'm just going to order a 62HM84 for a great price
and settle for that. I haven't seen a rainbow on a dlp or the "screen door"
effect of LCD provided I stay away about 8-10'. My living room is 18' x 26'
so we'll not have any problems getting back from the set.

I LOVE the LCD Sony KDF60XS955, picture and style. Price isn't too bad at
CC either...they are 2 blocks away, so it's "handy".
I LOVE the Tosh dlp too. But can't buy it locally for a decent price.
Same with the Mits 62725 DLP...I can buy it for a "decent" price, but it's
STILL 1000 bucks more than the Tosh.

Yeah, I know the tosh doesn't have the receiver built in...and the 84 model
doesn't have the cable card slot. But damn, I'm reading so much about
people having problems with the cards that it's just best to use the comcast
box so you can get the menu channel and ppv feature. I consider myself I
pretty "sharp" shopper....but this is my most confusing purchasing yet!!

I'm hardly a video buff at all and WILL watch a lot of TV in analog. Like I
said, I have comcast too. Prolly watch 50-50 analog/dvd-hdtv. So here's my
questions:

1. What about the future of LCD? Man, that KDF sure looks nice:)
2. The tosh 62hm84 is a steal at 2700....but it doesn't have cable card or
a built in receiver. Will I need either having comcast?
3. Is the Mits "worth" 1000 bucks more than the Tosh given my viewing
habits/situation?

Thanks for reading/responding...and YES, I'm still learning by reading posts
and reading forums...so if I've said something incorrectly, have pity.

.....and happy new year to all.

This is the only Question I can Answer... partially..
It depends were you live.... And has your local Comcast signed
HDTV transmission agreements with the 7 major OTA locals....??

In GBay, WI Time Warner has signed with: ABC-HD, CBS-HD, PBS-HD,
and NBC-HD... No cable deals yet with FOX-HD(Big hole),
UPN-HD, nor WB-HD which will come on air June 05.

OTA is UHF antenna($25), RG-6 Cable & Samsung T-451 tuner($250)..
in most city Tower locations up to 50 miles out...

I have the 42" Sony KDF RPLCD and sitting 7' away see no screen door. What
I DO see is perfect geometry and even illumination... even considering this
is a projection set. Screen is always adequately bright, even with all my
glass walls and skylight. All local network HDTV broadcasts come over my
Comcast basic analog cable without a STB or cablecard, since my set has all
tuners built-in.

The 42" uses the same bulb as the 50" Sony, so image is even a bit brighter
than the 50". As for legacy analog stations, though cable sharpness varies
from channel to channel, on the better ones the 4:3 image is good for my TV
size and viewing distance and can even be zoomed to fill 16:9 without
looking horrible. And since it's RPLCD, never any fear of sidebars or
network logos burning in, and no need to distort a 4:3 image simply to
avoid plasma problems.

There may be better technology at this same price point in a few years, but
for now Sony RPLCD is certainly cost-effective. On 1080i channels the
clarity and sharpness border on the surreal. DVDs take on a whole new
life, and the overall experience beats going to the cinema.

I personally thought the Mits was worth $700 bucks more as I looked at it
side by side with the Toshiba and Samsungs a LOT. The Defini-Edge really
seems to help with things like the edges of arrows on HD NFL and such. In
addition we felt that the Mits never showed some of the low noise issues,
which seem to me to show up more on the edges of the picture, that we saw on
the Toshiba (I never did see them on the Samsung). I figured I was going to
spend over $3K on a TV anyway so I wanted the one that I thought had the
best picture. I bought it about two weeks ago and am very happy with it
(incidentally my room gets a LOT of sun from several windows and the only
thing I do it turn up the brightness on some programming during the day)
using Dish Network HD and SD as well as DVD and my PS2.

I guess my advice would be to buy the set that looks the best to you and
that has the features you want - speaking of which, the NetCommand gig is
pretty cool but will NOT work with my Dish Network receiver because it's UHF
only, not IR.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply. I WISH I could get the mits and the tosh in the same
showroom to compare. I'm viewing the mits at a local tweeter and the tosh
at boscovs and pretty much adjusting the pictures myself. At tweeter, the
panasonic dlp is right next to the mits and the mits is better by my
eye...and that's with me adusting, like I said.

Food for thought:) I'd sure like to buy local too......I worked for UPS
for 8years when I was going to school and man, I sure hate the thought of my
3k purchase going through a trucking hub...LOL

I have the Sony 50" Grand Wega (KDF-50WE655) and really like it. I do not
like dealing with external boxes for anything so the built-in tuner and
CableCard were a must have. I use Time Warner Cable and an external
antenna. The main local HD stations are carried by Time Warner and picked
up by my set without a CableCard or external box. This is a capability of
this particular internal tuner (others may do the same). I have an older
Toshiba external tuner for my other set and it is not capable of picking up
digital channels through cable (only OTA and Directv).

Of all the sets I researched, I liked the picture the best on this set
compared to other LCDs and DLPs. And just importantly, it had the right
features. Some of the plasmas looked better, but were 2 to 3 times the
price. My thought is that if I want a plasma set in 3-5 years, the price
will be no more or less than what I paid for this set. Therefore, I would
have two sets then for the price I would pay for plasma now and it would be
a better set. This worked out with a Toshiba 60" 4:3 HD set I bought 5
years ago. I could have gone for the 16:9 format, but it was twice the
price and not worth it at that point because most programming was 4:3.
Again, I now have two sets that work well for what I could have purchased
the one set 5 years ago.

It makes a big difference, I made them put each through all the various
signal inputs at the same time (HD OTA, HD Sat., DVD, and SD) and adjusted
the picture myself on all three of them. Keep in mind though that the 62"
Mits does not have a built in ATSC tuner, just NTSC. The 52" does have a
built in ATSC/NTSC tuner, why it's not in the 62" I don't know other than
price. Since I'm using a Satellite receiver I had to have a separate box
anyway, but my new entertainment center hides it and the center channel
speaker behind a black mesh grill, so it's no biggie.

As for shipping, I was going to purchase from an e-tailer but the thought of
having something like that shipped scared me, along with the potential
problems of trying to return it if necessary. Anyway, Mitsubishi was
offering two years interest / payment free financing through the local
HHGregg so that sealed the deal. They started to un-box it in the store when
I picked it up to make me examine it for shipping damage but I stopped them
almost immediately. It basically had it's own roll-cage constructed around
it and there was no way we were going to be able to get it boxed back up
like that!! The relatively light weight is a real blessing when you move
it!!

Best of luck on whatever you decide, post back when you make your purchase
and let us know what you decided and how it's working out for you!
