Samsung's DLP vs. Plasma?

What is your opinion of which one is better? Can you fill me in a little.

Going to be hard to detect the difference in picture quality once you have
the DLP in your house. They are so close that the money saved can be spent
on more toys.

Refurbelectronics.com has a brand new, from the factory, 61in Samsung DLP,
model #HLN617W, with 4-year extended warranty included for $2650. I have
made a few purchases with them and have had good experiences.

This unit is a precursor to the Samsung 63 series. The newer series offers
both HDMI and DVI inputs, as well as a 1500 contrast ratio as opposed to the
1000 offered in the earlier unit. However, in my opinion, these high
contrast ratios - 2000+ - aren't as significant as manufacturers would like
you to believe. The human eye, ambient light, surroundings, etc. all have
affect the ability to decipher the differences. Once you get over 600 I
believe that all is good.

Just my humble opinion.

There were discussions here in a couple threads and also at AV forom
about Samsung DLP's having an audio
sync issue when used with an external sound system. Don't know which
models it pertains to, but I'd do a
search and check.

Not a simple question which is probably why you didn't get many
replies. They both have pros & cons, the main pro for the DLP RP TVs
being their lower price for the bigger screens. You can find a lot about
the two TV types in the LCD/Plasma and RP TV forums at avsforum.com.

The main cons to the DLP RP TVs are limited viewing angles, possible
rainbow effects due to the color wheel, some complaints about the odd
clay color effect in picture quality, and that they have an expensive
$300 to $400 bulb that has to be replaced every few years (or 4000 to
8000 hours of use). The number of problem reports with the Samsung DLP
sets was one reason I moved away from getting one.

The plasmas on the other hand cost more, especially if you want a 50"
HD TV. The plasmas also vary a lot more in picture quality between the
cheap and brand names than do the DLP sets. If you go the plasma route,
I would stick with the better brand names - Panasonic, Pioneer, the
XS955 Sonys, Fujistu (if you have the $) and maybe the next lower tier:
LG, Philips - over the no name brands you see at the warehouse stores or
Best Buy. But the better and newer plasma offer good black levels, wide
viewing angles, long lifespans, no motion smear (vs LCD) and a stunning
picture which can have this film like look.

My decision, was after a lot of research and many trips to a lot of
stores, was to get a Panasonic 42" plasma. Other people on a tighter
budget, who want a big screen, may go to for DLP or LCD RP TV sets. You
just have to sort through what meets your situation.

I have my Samsung DLP set connected to a Sony surround system via the
optical cable and have never noticed a sync problem, even if the sound
system speakers and the TV's speakers are on at the same time.
I have noticed an audio sync problem in broadcast TV, however, but what's
weird is that it's worse on some channels than others. It seems like it's
barely noticable on channels above 13 but but quite noticable on the lower
channels.
