Picture Quality degrading going from Exp 2100 to Pace DC55..

I just got a Toshiba 65" Cinema Series HD TV, was using a Scientific Atlanta
Explorer 2100 from local Fla Brighthouse Cable Co. I traded the 2100 box
for a Pace DC550P HDTV Box.

On the 2100 box the normal (I guess the term is "upconverted") pictures on
channels were great. Now only the pictures on the HDTV (channels 1000 and
up) are nice. The other channels seem to have noise/snow on them. I reset
the TV to defaults and just increased the brightness. That has seemed to
fix it somewhat. But is this what HDTV does to non HD channels???

Is there something I can do? Also the non HD channels are chopped off on
the sides. By using the front panel PACE buttons if I change from 4:3 to
16:9 there is no difference. Screen is also set to 1080 thru the PACE box.

Anyone got any ideas?

Well, I don't have any experience with that particular box. My own
satellite box has, deep in its setup a video setup that lets me override
the 1080i output to 480p for standard def channels. That lets the TV
handle it the same as a progressive scan DVD, though I found that I got
nearly as good results by just telling the box that my TV was 4:3 and
using the TV's control to set the aspect ratio (my TV is 4:3).

The other avenue you might take is to see if the box has an Svideo output
that you can wire to an Svideo input on the TV and just switch to that
mode for SDTV. I've found Svideo to be nearly as good as progressive
scan, since my TV upconverts it all anyway.

Don't be afraid to play around with the setup menu a bit. Just make sure
you write down where the settings were at before you change any.
