"AP
Cablevision May Sell Satellite TV Unit
December 21, 2004 3:29 PM ET

By SETH SUTEL

NEW YORK (AP) - Cablevision Systems Corp., a Long Island-based cable TV
provider, said Tuesday it is suspending plans for a spinoff of its
money-losing satellite broadcasting business and will put the unit on
the market instead.

The high-definition satellite venture, which is marketed under the brand
name VOOM, has had a tough start since being launched more than a year
ago and has been a source of major concern among Cablevision's investors.

It lasted longer than I thought it would.

I was thinking of getting it, especially now with their offer of free
installation, a reciever for each room $1.00. If they get sold, wouldn't their
hd receiver still be a bargain?

Not if the company is sold for parts... ;-)

Someone might just find themselves with a market turning arround,
after buying. With the arrival of affordable monitors in just the last
few months (under 600$, many new HD viewers will now start entering
the market, & they may be disatified with thier other providers
choices for HDTV

Puhleeeze!!

If digital sets had a 50% penetration in theU.S., they'd STILL only attract
a TINY percentage to subscribe. And that's still not enough to make it
profitable...or even break even!

Now is definately not the time to get VOOM! Getting past all their
advertising hype, the reality is that when you select VOOM (or any
satellite service) you're going to be out a couple hundred bucks at the
beginning. If you have less than spotless credit you're likely be to be
out closer to half a grand once a hefty deposite fee is tagged on.

If the company goes under or sales out, expect to have to wait a very
long time and join in a legal battle to try and get ANY of your money
back.. I've been there.

I'd be willing to bet that they retain ownership of the boxes (which of
course only work with VOom)
I'd also suspect that the HD OTA receiver functions don't work without a
valid VOom account.

I have to admit, it is tempting though.

Well, here's another case where I can say I told you so. Where are
all the geniuses from a year ago that said Voom would be so successful?
I told you this what would happen and now here it is. But then it's
no surprise coming from Cablevision. Their stockholder's should be
used to it by now. The only remaining question is how big of a bath
they will take before it's over.
