On other sites I've seen comments that this unit is less than desirable to
own/operate. However, I have been unable to get much detail about whatever
its shortcomings are. Has anyone here any experience good or bad with this
unit? The price of it just dropped by half and is supposedly being
discontinued.

I went for one on the dish newbie deal...paid $300 for it....Hell, I've got
VHS-S vcr's that cost more than that.
Works fine for me so far. THE abilility to record high definition is a
must-have for me and the quality is excellent!
It does not yet have an internal guide for local hi-def channels, but that's
due to change next week with a software upgrade. The only other thing I can
think of is that it dooes not find and record programs by name...like a
Tivo...it works more like a VCR where you specify time, date and channel #.
I don't see how you can go wrong for $300. IMHO
