Questions for HDTV experts:

1. Can NTSC and ATSC(HDTV) be broadcasting at the same time in the same
bandwidth and in the same area?

2. Is that the so-called "NTSC co-channel interference filter"
in the HDTV receiver supposed to do? But what about the existing
analog TV receiver?

3. What does the FCC say about the NTSC/ATSC simultaneous broadcasting?

4. Is there any TV station in the US that is broadcasting both
NTSC and ATSC(HDTV) at the same time?

Thank you in advance!

Harry:

Most US analog TV stations are now Broadcasting BOTH

Analog & Digital TV Program signals at the same time.

They are Broadcasting on two Different Frequencies....

and use double the Electrical Power... In some cases they use

the same Tower but different antenna... Other cases they

built a new Tower to share cost & facility with other Digital/

HD TV Stations....

In 3 to 4 years the Analog TV Signal will stop....

and only Std Def & Hi Def Digital transmissions will remain....

Not without problems.

The NTSC filter is effective to a point; but ATSC breakup will occur
once the NTSC video and FM sound carriers become too great. As an
example, I am able to receive WLIW-DT channel 22, but there is also a
low power NTSC signal also on the same channel. Reception breaks up when
the NTSC carriers (video and FM sound) are roughly about the same
strength as the ATSC pilot carrier. The NTSC signal, on the other hand,
is too far down in the noise to be of any use on an NTSC TV. Since the
NTSC channel is MTV-2 (a cable channel), I suspect that the interfering
channel might be either cable leakage or someone in the neighborhood
using a TV modulator to wirelessly connect a remote TV to the cable
channel. Since there is no coaxial cable between the house and the cable
system and there is no satellite system, the problem cannot be coming
from within the house.

Most do, but not on the same channel.

We have a low power TV station on channel 24 in Boston broadcasting MTV2, so
maybe you have the same in your neck of the woods.

24+ WVXN-CA Boston LIC 26.0 kW 292 m * MTV2 (broadcast feed)

No; and there is no reason to do this. An all digital station can send out
one or several digital programs at once. A digital to analog converter box
can output NTSC to an analog TV set. What they did Down Under makes no sense
and wastes bandwidth (a mandate for HDTV and low def resolutions at the same
time). Guess those elected officials don't have much faith in technology.

Thanks for the info. There in one likely station in my area, WMBQ-CA in
Cranford, NJ about 6 miles distant but behind a 600 foot hill.
Unfortunately the MTV-2 station does not provide station identification,
making it difficult to find the source of the interference.

Here in the San Francisco bay area theeir are several OTA "dt" stations that
transmit SD and HD at the same time. One has SD repeat of their analog
channel and an HD channel. Still another station tramits an SD of their
analog AND a HD" upconvert of the analog.

Here in El Paso, TX the PBS station has their digital transmittion on
channel 30. There is also a low power religious translator in Las
Cruces, NM on analog channel 30 at about 40 miles distant. I would
have thought that the religious station would have to change
frequencies but to date they are both still on. The PBS station only
operates 12 hours per day and when they are off, I can get a snowy
signal on the religious channel, but once PBS digital comes on about
11:00 am the religious channel completly disappears. I have wondered
if people in Las Cruces who are closer to the religious translator
than PBS can get both or are they prevented from getting PBS? If
anyone here is in Las Cruces, NM let us know.
