I read many good reviews online about this TV. There is a third generation
model that just recently came out (HLP5063W) which costs about $500 more
than the second generation (HLN5065W). I'm wondering if it's worth spending
the money on the newer model. If anyone has experience with this product or
similar DLP rear projection TVs please reply.

Thanks!

I believe the MSRPs between the equivalent HLN and HLP models are the
same, the $500 difference is the probably close out sale price. The
HLPxx63 models use the TI HD3 chip with improved contrast specs over the
HLN models which use the HD2 chip. But the HD3 chip uses 1 mirror to
drive 2 screen pixels and is the low cost version of the new TI chips
(HD3, HD2+, xHD3). This web page is getting out of date on release dates
and some info on the chips (author of the page passed away), but still
is useful for background: http://www.digiupdate.com/105_DLP_RPTV.html.

The new so-called Captain Kirk Pedestal models, the HLPxx85, are out
while the HLPxx74 are not due until October. These use the HD2+ chip and
I was impressed by the improved contrast in the xx85 model I have seen.

Only YOUR eyeballs can decide. Hype is Hype. I have the HLN507W and my 70
year old eyeballs love it.

Seen a couple of these for service already[ HL-P series], seems they may
have the same lamp ballast issue as the previous model designs. However, the
new layout does make it a lot easier for the technicians to replace the lamp
and ballast. Thanks Samsung for taking service issue seriously in the
re-design. Overal picture quality seems quite good with HDTV or DVD applied,
Analog up-conveted still has a nominal grainy reproduction.

Interestingly enough, I had a chance to see the HLP5063 next to the
"Captain Kirk" 50" yesterday and honestly... I could not see much
difference if any. I was at CC and they had the Olympic feed on, and
neither set showed any pixelization/artifacting during any fast action
or splashes.

I spoke with two of the guys that worked there, and one was a
bona-fide techno geek, explained the dimpled mirrors and stuff to me
(which I had already read about). But the bottom line was that if I
was buying a 50" I think I'd be pretty happy with the HLP5063 for two
reasons; one being the price, the other being that the Captain Kirk's
design just does not appeal to me in any way, shape, or form. The
huge triangular plexi base will be a dust collector extraordinaire,
and the fact that it would require a separate stand for any sort of
components is a bummer. It's also the first Samy to use outboard
"wing" speakers so the unit is about a foot wider than it needs to be.
And I'm saying this as a professional industrial designer, not just a
consumer.

What seems to be up in the air is when the HLP5674W 56" HD2+ "regular"
Tantus tabletop model will be released. That is a set that interests
me because it's supposedly only 49.6" wide but goes edge to edge with
a 1/4" molding and not 2" black strips.

But back to the original matter... most retailers are heavily
discounting the "older" HLN models, and I think it _IS_ worth the
extra $500 or so to get the HLP5063W with the HD3 chip (poor man's
version of the HD2+) over last year's model.
