I was watching the PGA Championship yesterday in HD on one of the major
networks. I noticed that the picture would switch from HD quality to
standard definition quite frequently depending on the camera being used.
Even on the same hole, you'd see a spectacular HD shot of the ball landing
on the green, then there'd be a closeup of the player and it would look SD.
Shots from the blimp were mediocre but shots of the commentators were
definitely HD. Is this due to the types of camera being used? It was rather
annoying.

Pure and simple...not enough HD camera to go around.

Don't get TNT-HD yet, but wonder if this
might be a difference in 1080i upconversion
policy compared to CBS this weekend.
Normally, CBS weekend-coverage 1080i shots,
even if they didn't originate from HD cameras
but are upconverted, look fairly good
compared to SD. (Don't think a switch on a HD
network such as TNT-HD could be back and
forth to SD, just to 1080i-upconverted SD;
widescreen upconverted SD, from widescreen
cameras, currently.) CBS uses very high-grade
upconversion hardware. One reason closeups
may look bad is that shoulder-carried field
cameras clearly lack the fidelity of the
larger crane and tripod ones. Broadcasters
usually apply more edge enhancement ('ghosts'
on object edges visible on larger screens) to
these smaller camera outputs (from what I see
on my screen). Here's an old thread that
discusses this:

So, while the basic hardware is being shared
by TNT and CBS, perhaps the outgoing network
signals will differ.
