No sound from the center speaker/Law and Order/San Francis..

On a Dolby Digital set-up, I have noticed that there is no sound coming from
the center channel when I watch Law and Order. This makes the conversations
harder to follow (it reminds you again how important the center speaker
is!). For the record, this is watching the show on the local NBC affiliate
in San Francisco. I use the HR10-250 high-def TiVo receiver (so,
off-the-air digital channel 11.1) with a Sony DB930 audio receiver. The
receiver identifies the audio signal as Dolby 5.1 with a center channel, but
no sound comes out of the center speaker. Both receivers and the center
speaker perform just fine when I surf to another channel with a 5.1 signal.
Admittedly, I haven't waited for other programs with 5.1 audio _on the same
station_ to see if it is just the local affiliate screwing up the signal the
way many local stations mess up their high-def, digital channels.

Has anyone else seen this?

Since you stated the center channel works ok on other channels, I doubt this
is your problem, but it happened to me, and drove me crazy until I finally
decided to "RTFM" ...

My audio receiver has several modes the center channel can be in (nomral,
wideband, etc) ... for some reason it was set to send the center audio
stream to the front L/R speakers (I'm guessing in case you didn't have a
center speaker in your setup), and the result was conversations were hard to
hear.

I would expect that the "San Francisco NBC affiliate" would only use
the far left channel.

The NBC affiliate for the San Francisco bay area is San Jose's KNTV
channel 11 in the South bay. The transmitter site is near Morgan Hill.

North bay viewers may have OTA reception problems. I believe there is a plan
in the works to relocate the transmitter site.

Actually, that's what happened on the night when Halle Berry was on Leno.

My audio receiver was set to create 5-channel pseudo surround from the
tuner's regular 2-channel output. It was awful. The left-front speaker
was the loudest and the others were out of phase or reverb.

It only happened for that one show, so I expect that NBC11 in San Jose
had technical problems.
