Help!!

I just got a HDTV receiver for my TV, and the picture is astounding.
However, I am having some difficulty getting the 5.1 surround sound to
work through my home theatre system, and the receiver's manual doesn't
explain how to get it to work properly.

So far, I have ran audio cords from the HD receiver to the "Video 2"
inputs in my home theatre receiver. I have also ran the digital coaxial
cable from the HD receiver to the digital coaxial "Video 2" input in the
home theatre system.

I was assuming this would be all that was necessary to get 5.1 sound to
work properly. However, all I am receiving is Dolby Digital sound to the
left and right front speakers and nothing else. I have set the HD
receiver to Dolby Digital from PCM, and I'm at a loss at what to do next
to get this to work.

Does anyone notice anything I am doing wrong or have any suggestions?
Thanks!!

You have it hooked up correctly. If you're getting the DD feed over the
digital audio coax cable, then everything is fine. The standard for HD
is DD. DD does not imply the signal is 5.1. It only means it is encoded
using a DD audio stream. The stream could be 1.0 for mono sources, 2.0
for left/right stereo channels that can be further processed by Dolby
Pro Logic II, DTS Neo:6, or Logic 7, etc, a 3.1 signal with three
distinct front channels, a sub channel and surrounds decoded as mono
like DPL, or a 5.1 signal with all discrete channels. I doubt we'll see
discrete 6.1/7.1 any time in the near future.

Thanks guys. I was under the impression that all HDTV was by default
broadcast in 5.1 surround sound. Based on your responses, I guess HDTV
audio has the CAPABILITY to be broadcast in 5.1, but MAY be broadcast in
other Dolby Digital formats. Is this correct?

The only program that I am aware of that states it is in 5.1 audio is The
Sopranos. I'll try to catch a rerun of that show to see if I have it
setup correctly.

Again, I appreciate the help. It lets me keep my sanity!

Well, you can't really "get" it to work. The broadcast either has a 5.1
soundtrack attacked to it, or it doesn't. Many of the OTA networks, I've
noticed, don't. Just from surfing around last night, I noticed that both CBS
and ABC had DD 2.0 audio, while NBC had a Pro Logic signal.

The pay movie networks do 5.1 more often, but not all the time.

Yes, that's correct.

Try this list:

http://www.dolby.com/ht/pa.in.dtv5.1list.html

Also, even if your local stations aren't passing 5.1 audio because they
can't afford the equipment just yet, there's a strong chance your local
PBS will because of the method PBS HD is rebroadcast (ATSC encoded at
PBS national, picked up and retransmitted by local stations.)

In any case, there are only a few PBS programs that have 5.1. They're
listed on this list:

http://www.pbs.org/digitaltv/dtvsched.htm

Write the date and time down, and tune in. If you get DD5.1 from PBS,
and there's a very strong chance you will, then you're good to go and
it's just your local stations that aren't passing anything more than
stereo if the program is available in DD5.1.
