I'm looking at getting the Hitachi 51S500 and wondering what people's
advice concerning extended warranties were wrt rear projectin hdtvs.
i've bought several CRT tube tvs and never once bought an extended
warranty and never once had a problem, but i'm a bit concerned with
rear projs.

thanks in advance,

My advice is to read the fine print.

I NEVER buy a warranty because I know that the salesman gets most of it. (I
didn't buy on one my Hitachi HDTV) However last year I bought one from
Circuit City on a Sony HD200 tuner when the unit first came out. I had
heard that there was some reliability problems with it. Sure enough within
a couple of months Sony had to replace it twice under factory warranty.

I then recalled that the Circuit City warranty was associated with a serial
number. When I called CC to make the change, they said I couldn't do it and
the extended warranty was no good. They would be glad to refund my money on
a pro-rated basis. I lost about one third of the warranty price for
insuring exactly nothing.
