[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]If you run an unsecured WiFi network you deserve anything that happens to you. Government should've done their homework though before breaking down the guys dorm. I wonder how many other people were stealing his internet.[/citation]
really? you deserve to be run over by a truck? It could happen to you, right? could happen to anyone... So, pretty much, he deserves to die if his Wifi is not secured?
A little thought goes a long way...
Besides, it's like arguing "if you don't lock up your front door, you deserve to be the victim of a home invasion, or worse..." Not even beginning to argue how sick that is...

Besides, he's a good person... he's not filing a lawsuit, like vast majority of idiots out there would do. He just wants some lessons to be learned from this - albeit I have a feeling that the only person learning a lesson is him. Govt. is not good at learning.

I have a dedicated system just to leech bandwidth off of a neighbor's unsecured router and broadband.I use it to watch movies and TV episodes on Hulu. It's great I don't even bother with paying for cable TV.

At otacon 72, would he have deserved it if he had a WEP password, which could be broken by most novices in minutes?
Would he have deserved it even if he used WPA or WPA2 but used a simple password? At some point if someone wants to hack your connection any resourceful hacker can. However I agree with you at some point people have got to take responsibility and put on meaningful security to their WIFI networks.

Yet another reason why I don't care if my house looks like Tron, wireless will never be as secure, fast, or stable as a hardline. As long as your signal is leaving the walls of your home through the air it CAN be tapped into and hacked. I work for an ISP and laugh whenever someone gets their net disconnected because the dummy insists on having wireless so they can watch Jersey Shore and tweet about it at the same time (an actual reason that was given to me), and it gets tapped into by the 12 year old next door who downloads torrents from monitored locations. It doesn't even matter if you password protect it anymore, there are multiple utilities for script kiddies everywhere to bypass it.

"Here's a good example of why homeowners need to secure their Wi-Fi network"

Let me change that a bit for ya:

"Here's a good example of how policemen shouldn't do their job and how clueless they are about the Internet in general"

what is sad is that the government tells you you should secure your wifi, but whats the point? all you have to do is use the connection and someone can steal the packets and brake the wireless key. If its not out for newer standerds, it is only a matter of time.

pure and simple wireless is insecure, WEP key is a joke. If you want better security, mask your IP and impliment MAC address filtering to only allow YOUR hardware to connect.

although security exist, and a wep key helps to keep the information safe, I do not consider it as the best first step in securing my wireless. If any person was determend enough they can and will brake in.

It is unfortionate that this couple had to endure such an event, and it is more unnerving hearing how the police force is able to get warents without following there procedures. It is already well known that WEP can be broken into, it is also well known that mobile computing has sky rocketed, the fact that law inforcement just brushed these details off to rush in on the hopes of nabbing a suspect no matter what he did is flat out wrong.

I do beleave that those who broke the law should be punished, but I also beleave in protecting the innocence and rights of the people around us. If the wrong person was arrested, and all it took was a little digging to find the right person an investigation of the department should be carried out from top to bottom.

No one innocent should have law inforcement braking down there door, especialy since cops never brake down doors for anything lightly. mistakes like this can not be forgotten and should be a massive mark of shame for all those involved.

although our law inforcement strives to protect us, and for the most part do well at the task, they do diserve praises for all there hard work. The mistakes we make should never be forgotten... otherwheise how are we going to improve?

My state ruled a few months ago that child porn can only be illegal when stored on your computer, not just accessed on your computer. I always shock people when I say that I support the ruling, but this is exactly why I support it.

You can really screw a neighbor over, that you don't like.

The lesson here should be obvious: secure your internet connection if you're using Wi-Fi in the house.

Why? Surely in a free state that has laws and procedures that are followed you should be safe in your home and able to offer free internet to anyone passing or unfortunate enough not to be able to afford their own. Or is charity somehow illegal now?
