Windows 10 Delivery Optimization Advanced Options

New to the Windows 10 Insider Program, build 16237, Microsoft has introduced a way to for users to control the amount of bandwidth used to download and upload system and app updates. These new settings are placed under the Advanced Settings of the Delivery Optimization settings and are ideal for those on metered connections to ensure that data usages are not exceeded.

Here, we will explore the Advanced options of the Delivery Optimization settings and briefly explain how they affect the way you receive updates.

1. Accessing Delivery Optimization Advanced Settings
To access the Advanced Options, go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Advanced Options -> Delivery Optimization and click the Advanced options link.

2. Exploring the Advanced Options
On the Advanced options page, you will notice some new settings that Microsoft has introduced to adjust how much bandwidth your updates use. Even though Windows 10 dynamically adjusts your bandwidth automatically, you can use the various sliders to manually override this.

a. Download Settings – Here you can adjust the bandwidth you want to allocate to downloading updates. Note, however, that the minimum value this can be set to is 5% as it is not possible to completely disable Windows update.

b. Upload Settings – This setting gives you two options when it comes to limiting your upload capacity. You can use the slider adjust how much bandwidth you want to be dedicated to uploading updates, or you can put a cap on the monthly upload limit in gigabytes (up to 500GB).

3. Activity Monitor
Access the Activity Monitor by going to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Advanced Options -> Delivery Optimization and click the Activity Monitor link. Here you can view your download statistics on a monthly basis.
