How to Fix a Galaxy Note 8 That Will Not Power On

Having a brand new Note8 that won’t power can be a stressful ordeal. Luckily, the cause of this issue is not always severe and there are some simple fixes that you can try before returning your phone or sending it for repairs.

Here we will outline some troubleshooting tips, starting the easiest, that you can attempt before handing it over to a licensed technician.

1. Try Charging the Phone
Get the obvious out of the way, by ensuring that the battery has not run out of charge. Plug the phone charger into a working power outlet and connect the cable to the USB-C port in the Note8.

With the phone now plugged in and charging you should be able to see the battery charging graphic with the charge level and the notification LED should glow red. If these signs are not immediately apparent, leave the phone to charge for an additional 10 minutes before attempting powering on.

If after 10 minutes no sign of charging is observed, then it is possible that the problem lies with the phone’s hardware and you may need to see a technician. If the phone seems to be receiving charge and still won’t power on then move on to the other steps.

2. Try Force Rebooting With the Charger Plugged in
To perform a force reboot hold down the Volume Down key and the Power key for approximately 7 seconds.
Since the operating system is responsible for regulating the amount of current the battery receives, it is possible that a system crash may cause charging problems and, by extension, cause the phone to not power on.

If the phone powers on after a force reboot, then the problem was due to a system crash. If your Note8 is still unresponsive, try the next step.

3. Boot Into Safe Mode
Boot into safe mode by following these steps:
a. Press and hold the Power button. The device will turn on and the model name (Galaxy Note8) will screen will appear.
b. When the SAMSUNG logo screen appears, release the Power button.
c. Immediately after releasing the power button, press and hold the Volume Down key.
d. When you see the word Safe Mode appear, release the Volume Down key.
If you are able to boot in safe mode then that is good news. It is possible that your issues may be caused by a third-party app. Now that your phone is in safe mode, you can begin uninstalling apps that may be causing conflict with the phone’s OS.
   
4. Boot into Recovery Mode – Wipe Cache Partition
a. Press and hold the Bixby key and the Volume up key, then press and hold the Power key.
b. When the Android mascot appears, release all keys. You should see “Installing system update” for approximately 30-60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu appears.
c. Use the Volume down key to navigate through the recovery menu and highlight “Wipe Cache Partition” and press the Power button to select. The phone will begin the Factory reset.
After wiping the cache partition, try charging you phone again. If no success, move on to the next step.

5. Boot into Recovery Mode and Do a Hard Reset
a. Before you proceed with the hard reset, it is highly recommended that you back up all of your important data on a computer, hard drive or external SD card.
b. Ensure the device is turned off
c. Press and hold the Bixby key and the Volume up key, then press and hold the Power key.
d. When the Android mascot appears, release all keys. You should see “Installing system update” for approximately 30-60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu appears.
e. Use the Volume down key to navigate through the recovery menu and highlight “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” and press the Power key to select.
f. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power key.
g. When the Factory reset is complete, press the Power key to select “Reboot system now”. The phone will restart with all data reset.
Now try powering on your phone once more.

6. Return Your Phone or See a Certified Technician
If you have gone through all the troubleshooting steps and your phone still will not power on, then your next option is to return your phone to the store and have it seen by a certified technician.
