What is IV and how to do I calculate it in Pokemon Go

So you just got enough candies to level up a good pokemon, but you have a few of them to choose from. Which one do you evolve? Just the one with the highest CP probably, right? Well, turns out that's not necessarily true and if you do it that way, you could end up leveling a very weak pokemon. So how do you figure out which one to evolve and keep? There are a few useful IV calculators out there, the most popular being Pokeassistant and the simpler, more straight forward SilphRoad IV Rater

Step 1)What is IV?

IV is the hidden stats - or "Individual Values" of the pokemon that contribute to it's Combat Power, Attack and health pool. Your pokemon can have anywhere from 0-15 in three different hidden stats, including attack, defense, and stamina. A perfect pokemon will have 15 in all of these stats, but that's very rare and hard to find.

Step 2)How to find these hidden stats.

Check out the pokeassistant website (Or the SilphRoad IV Rater), and go to the IV calculator located there. It will ask you the type of pokemon, the max HP, the total stardust needed to power them up, and if you have powered them up or not. Once you have entered the information, hit submit and it's going to tell you how good your pokemon is.

Step 3)How do you read this information?

Pokeassistant doesn't just say without a doubt your pokemon has 10 attack, 8 defense, and 15 stamina or anything like that most of the time. Generally, you are going to get a list of what your pokemon -might- be. The higher the CP the pokemon is to start, the more accurate the results are going to be - with the best results being over 1000 CP. If you level up the pokemon a few times to get him there, it's going to be even more accurate. So if you get a pokemon that could potentially be higher than 80% perfection, you might want to level that one up a few times and keep checking the IV ratings to see if he is indeed that high, it will narrow things down the more you level.
