It’s very important while playing VR games your tracking to work properly. You will need to check for couple of things to make sure that your problem is actually with the tracking, because sometimes it can indicates to something else. If the display of the headset is grey than for sure your headset is losing tracking. Follow this few steps so you can successfully solve the problem you are dealing with:

Step 1. Open Frame timing Graph

  • ■ When you think that you have tracking issues it’s very important to check for frame timing spikes. Because if you see timing spikes than your problem is with the CPU performance not with tracking.
    ■ Go to SteamVR > Settings > Performance > Display Frame Timing
Step 2. Check the connection of your base stations.

  • ■ See the proper set up for them and adjust them in the way they should be placed (above head height, angled down 30-45 degrees, no further than 5 meters and 16 feet apart)
    ■ Make sure they see each other
    ■ Make sure they are properly powered and synced

Step 3. Your devices should be in view of at least one base station.

  • ■ The LEDs of your base stations should be green.
Step 4. Check you cables.

  • ■ Make sure that the connections between the headset, link box and your computer are not loose.

Step 5. Issues caused by reflective surfaces

  • ■ This can also cause you tracking problems.
    ■ Try to cover all the surfaces in your VR area that can cause a reflection.
Step 6.Check for the front camera

  • ■ Turning on the front camera can also be a reason for tracking problems.
If you notice that every time you bring up dashboard you have problems with the tracking than the reason for this is your camera.
    ■ Lower the camera bandwidth
    ■ SteamVR > Settings > Camera, or just disable the front camera.
