There’s nothing quite like that sinking feeling you get when you turn on your phone and nothing happens. The phone you depend on, that reminds you of meetings, provides entertainment on the commute and keeps you in touch with the world. Fortunately, it isn’t necessarily a dead device and there are a few things you can do to get it working again.

There are some basic things to check before digging into the operating system. Try these first.
1. Pull the battery and leave it out for a minute if your phone has a removable battery.
2. Charge the phone for an hour and retry.
3. Remove the SIM and microSD card if you have one and retry.
Force reboot an Android phone
If none of the steps above have worked, you should now try a forced reboot. This is a simulated battery removal that forces the phone to restart even when it won’t respond to a normal boot.
1. Hold down the volume down and power buttons until the screen goes blank.
2. The phone should begin the boot process within 10 seconds or so.
Boot into safe mode
If your Android phone regularly refuses to power on it could be an app interfering with normal operation. Remove or disable any likely suspects and retest. It is a process of elimination but one of them is likely to be the culprit.
If you don’t have that luxury for some reason, boot your Android phone into safe mode.
1. Power off your Android phone if you managed to get it running.
2. Hold down the power button and volume down until the Android logo appears.
3. Select Safe mode by using volume buttons to navigate the menu and select using the power button.
4. Allow the phone to reboot.
5. You should see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.
If your phone boots into safe mode, chances are that it is an app causing the issue. Troubleshoot apps as you see fit.
