How to Use AirDrop between iOS and OS X Yosemite

AirDrop, available with the new Mac OS Yosemite update, allows Apple customers to seamlessly share content between their devices. If you have a Mac computer with Yosemite installed, as well as an Apple mobile device with iOS 7 or later, you can wirelessly share photos, videos, and more. Use the steps below to use this useful new feature.

Step 1
First of all, make sure you have the right device to do this. Apple’s website (http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT5887) lists the devices that are compatible with the AirDrop technology. For instance, if you have an iPhone, it will need to be a 5 or later. If you have an iPad, it will need to be fourth generation or later.

Step 2
On your mobile device, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the Control Center. You will see an AirDrop bar, between the music player and the utilities (flashlight, calculator, etc.) on the bottom of the screen. Tap the AirDrop button and select “Everyone.”

Step 3
On your Yosemite-enabled computer, open Finder and look in the Favorites list. AirDrop should be one of the options there. Click to open the program, and your computer should automatically start looking for nearby computers or devices also using AirDrop

Step 4
On your iOS device, go to the piece of content you want to share—a photo for instance. In the lower left-hand corner of the screen, tap the share button that you would normally use to upload content to Facebook, or attach it to a text. Select AirDrop and choose your computer.

Step 5
On your computer, you will get a notification that your phone is trying to send you something. Click “Save” to approve the file transfer.

Recap
With the addition of AirDrop to Yosemite, it’s now easier than ever before to transfer content between your device and your computer! Of course, you can also share content with other users. Just consider turning AirDrop off when you are done using it, so your device isn’t visible to any other nearby iOS devices using the feature.
