How to Get Your Defective iPhone 5 Battery Replaced

Have you noticed the battery on your iPhone 5 struggling to retain a charge as of late? It turns out that a small number of iPhone 5 model phones (original iPhone 5 models, not the iPhone 5S) have defective batteries that may “suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently”. iPhone 5 devices with this issue are eligible for free battery replacements. If you think you have a defective battery, here’s how to get it replaced.

Step 1
Apple says that the defective devices were sold “between September 2012 and January 2013.” If you purchased your iPhone 5 within the first weeks or months of its autumn 2012 availability, you may be able to get a replacement battery. If you just picked up your device a month or two ago, though, it’s not going to be eligible for the Apple recall.

Step 2
To determine if you are eligible for a battery replacement, go to the recall page on Apple’s website (https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/). There, you can learn more about the defect. There’s also a serial number checker, where you can type in the serial number from your iPhone 5 and click “Submit” to learn whether or not it is one of the affected phones. Since Apple says the defective batteries only fall within a “limited serial number range”, this is the best method for determining whether or not you qualify for the recall.

Step 3
If you are eligible for a replacement battery, there are numerous ways in which you can get your battery replaced. Find an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service provider nearby, or contact Apple Support to find out where to send the phone for repairs. You can do all of this from the recall page on Apple’s website.

Recap
If you bought your iPhone 5 in the fall of 2012 and have noticed battery problems recently, it may be eligible for a recall. Use the steps above to determine if it is, then take it/send it to Apple for a replacement! Just make sure you back up your contacts and data before having your battery replaced.
