Connecting Oculus Rift to a PC

When you first get your Oculus Rift, you may wonder how to connect everything to your PC. The Rift comes with a few cables to plug into your computer and into an electrical outlet. You will need some basic specifications on your computer, but besides that connecting the Rift to your computer is fairly straightforward.

When you first open up your Oculus Rift and want to get it set up, you should connect the Rift to a PC that supports heavy gaming. You will need a Direct 3D 10 or Open GL 3 compatible video card with a 2GB RAM and, at a minimum, a 2.0 GHz processor.

Step 1: Make sure your computer has an HDMI port or a DVI video-out port. VGA ports are not compatible with the Oculus Rift.

Step 2: Connect the headset to the computer via a USB port and one of the video ports (HDMI or DVI). Plug the power cord into the control box and an electrical outlet. When these three cables are connected, the screen should activate.

Step 3: Only attempt to connect the Rift to personal computers. It is not yet compatible with mobile devices. Your PC should run Windows Vista, 7 or 8 — not Windows XP.

Recap: The Oculus Rift is a new device that helps gamers connect to their video and computer games like they never have before. The Rift does take some time to configure and to connect to your computer, so take the time to do this properly before you jump into gaming. The Oculus Rift currently only connects to computers, but in the future may be able to be connected to gaming systems.
