Accessing iPad Crash Logs to Troubleshoot Crashes

If you have apps on your iPad that are crashing or freezing up for no apparent reason, it can be frustrating. Luckily, crash logs for all your apps are synced to your iTunes every time you connect your device to a computer, so you can easily find them, review them, and try to use them to troubleshoot the issues with your apps. Here’s how to find your crash logs.

Step 1

To make sure the most up-to-date versions of your crash logs have been synced to your iTunes account, plug your iPad into your computer, and do a full sync.

Step 2

The next steps will vary depending on which type of computer and operating system you use to sync your iPad.

If you are using a Mac, open Finder, and select the “Go” menu from the bar at the top of your screen. Choose the option that is second to the bottom, “Go to Folder,” and then type ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/ into the provided search box. Select the folder that matches the name of your iPad.

If you are using Windows, navigate to C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\. You should see a folder that matches the name of your iPad. Select it.

Recap

The problem is that these crash logs will likely look like gibberish to you, and you won’t even be able to open most of them. If you want to troubleshoot by using these crash logs, you will need to send them to Apple. By using this guide, though, you’ll at least know where to find app crash logs in case they are ever requested of you.
