Solved! Best headphones (preferably closed back) for gaming and music around AU$200/US$150

Hi all,

I’m currently in the market to buy a pair of headphones for gaming, as my current ones have become quite worn out. I’ve read that it is generally a better idea to buy a separate set of studio headphones and a microphone for the best possible sound quality and microphone performance respectively, so that is what I have decided to do now.

I will be using the headphones for both gaming and listening to music, mainly classic rock, with musicians and bands such as Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Santana and Queen, as well as many others in the 70s and 80s time period. I may want to use these headphones whilst commuting, so a closed back pair may be preferable.

My budget for the headphones themselves will be approximately AU$200/US$150.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! :)

I have the Audio Technica ATH-M50x and I love it. I use it to listen to high fidelity audio all the time and couldn't be happier. Costs around $150 Canadian so you also save a little money unless you want to opt for a more expensive model but I love these ones.

I have the Audio Technica ATH-M50X and I use it for over 5 years in my studio. I'm very satisfied with its sound quality and durability. It is the best seller pair of studio headphones on Amazon store with some pretty amazing reviews from users.
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO is also a very comfortable pair for long sessions in your studio. And it also offers excellent sound isolation.
Cheap but great value for money choice would be the Sony MDR 7506 at under $100. It has an old design but it’s a studio headphone that has been used by legend Mick Jagger.

I think the M50X has so many good reviews because people buy it and think it's good because they've never actually heard something that really is good. It's fine for mastering and mixing but it's terribly unmusical and I can't think of anything worse for pleasure listening. The M40X is better and cheaper.

That being said this thread is almost 5 months old. Please don't necro old threads. ;)
