My second hand MacBook Air has been overheating and crashing at certain times (since I bought it). The crashes were infrequent and since I only used the Macbook for low strain tasks (word processing, browsing the internet), I never thought to take the laptop to the apple store.

This one particular day, I had been organizing folders on the desktop and it suddenly turned into the screen you see in the picture.

Display at "startup screen"

Screen after a while being left on

Things I have tried to fix the problem (which didn't work)

  • I tried restarting the Macbook

I tried resetting the PRAM/NVRAM (with the command+option+P+R)

I tried resetting the SMC (LShift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds)

I tried booting in safe mode (which was redundant as the screen is glitched from the very startup)
The laptop is still functional as I managed to log in using the narration feature which somehow turned on. It seems the display or components controlling the display, is faulty.
I suspect this is a GPU problem since, as I mentioned, the laptop had been overheating and crashing since I bought it second hand and I know that the GPU can be damaged if the heat is severe enough, However, I would appreciate a second opinion.

Thanks.

Solution
It is either GPU failure or the cable from the GPU to the LCD panel is damaged.
Does it display like this on on an external monitor? If it does then it is likely the GPU, if it is normal then more likely to be the cable.
