Solved! Hopper installed and not working

Solution
Hopper connects to the TV with HDMI (in most cases).
DVD/VCR connects to the TV with HDMI for the DVD and composite video plus audio for DVD & VCR. This is for playback only.
If you want to record from the Hopper you would need to connect the AV output of the Hopper (if it has one) to the AV input of the DVD/VCR. The Hopper may not allow both the HDMI and AV connections to be active at the same time.
