This was flagged up when I loaded the game X4 foundations. In settings it was reading my graphics card as the intel 5600 not my gtx 970m.

I went into display after this and sure enough display was reading as running off the intel as well.

My drivers are all up to date, I tried disabling the intel graphics through device manager but this just killed my display.
I've been through Nvidia settings and set the preferred graphics processor as high performance.
I was going to try changing settings in the Bios as well but I can't seem to access this.

I have an msi GE72 2QF apache pro which is linked through display port to a dell AW3418DW

Yeah, so that model uses Nvidia's Optimus which is supposed to automatically switch between the discrete and integrated gpu based on the task. You will have to configure the settings in the Nvidia control panel.

Try these steps first: https://support.serato.com/hc/en-us/articles/202305784-Changing-graphics-card-settings-to-use-your-dedicated-GPU-on-a-Windows-computer-

and then try adding each individual program using this guide (go to page 3 where is says "Other Models – Optimus structure" : https://www.msi.com/pic/faq/10015790@2015-0422-0258-339852@faq_0000000001659_en.pdf

If that doesn't work, it could be that your display installed the incorrect drivers. Can you see which driver it is using in device manager?
