Walmart has a BF deal for $599.
HP Pavilion 15.6", Intel Core i5-8300H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, 15-CX0056WM
Is this the best I can do at that price point?

That's pretty good for the price, when I was looking at similar laptops about a month ago and they were about $150 more. The only downside I see about it is that apparently (according to the Walmart page) it only supports a maximum of 8gb.

I think it should be sufficient as a step-up from an i3 -6xxx laptop with a slow HDD and no discreet GPU.

17 year old daughter looking to step it up a bit.

It definitely will be, the 8300H is a quad core with HT and the 1050 ti is enough for med-high settings on newer titles. While 8gb isn't much it's still more then enough for gaming and some mild multitasking. And with the pricing of SSD's coming down eventually you could upgrade that HDD to a Crucial 500gb or 1TB SSD for fairly cheap.

I am eyeing this deal also, for a new mid-range gaming laptop, but am quite worried that I can't even find that model number on HOs website. There's a similar model laptop that ends in "ur" instead of "wm". Are we looking at a custom made model for Wal-Mart? w.m. I really want the parts lost and specs, but can't find any info.

If it is the exact same as the "ur" model, then this mobo has a higher max RAM that it can handle vs the listed specs at Wal-Mart. If not... 8gb is a pretty big dead end as far as this laptop and it's upgradability in a couple years, gaming or not.

As long as it lasts me 2 years my daughter will be happy.

I've also looked high and low for any more detailed specs. Guess I'll have to check it out when I get it cause I haven't found anything close at that price point.

I've heard Best Buy is BFing this for the same $599. It seems a better deal to me. Same graphics --- Max ram is 32 for sure (comes with 8) --- ssd is M.2 so there's an empty 2 1/2" bay waiting for (SSD, HDD, Hybrid ... whatever) - same Core i5-8300H, which is a Quad-Core 2.3GHz (up to 4.0GHz w/ Turbo) CPU with HyperThreading --- backlit keyboard --- full HD display --- etc. etc.

I ended up going to Microcenter and found something a bit more powerful with a 1060 and expandable memory up to 32gb.

Spent a lot more but no stressing over the 8gb max, and it's in my hand so no BF stressing. It was $750.

I've been loving Microcenter, they price match Newegg, Amazon and a few others but have had some great deals lately.

I'm lucky to have one less than 5 minutes from home, and 2 others within 45 minutes.

I did get the BF deal. Has 2 RAM slots. Came with 1 Hynix 8GB stick, DDR4 2666 CL19 1.2V. HDD is a HGST Travelstar 7K1000 1TB 7200RPM 2.5. Upgraded to 16GB with another 8GB stick from Crucial. Also SSD 500GB MX500 Crucial. Sweet machine now. Yet to run any benchmarks on it. Update FW to version 11 from HP as well. Next to test it with GeForce drivers if possible. Green little machine is very nice and smooth. Just ordered a Logitech G502 wired mouse on sale, a $45 saving!

Did you have to remove the 1TB hd or was there another place for a SSD?

I also just got the Walmart 599 Hp pavilion gaming rig and opened it up. I also added the extra 8gb into the open slot- awesome!

But! There is only one hdd/ssd slot. And it appears there is no m.2 slots. I will upgrade the 1tb 7200rpm to a 500gb ssd soon.

Hope this helps and bottom line: an amazing machine for 600 bucks. I am pleased so far.

No 2nd slot for dual SSD/HDD setup, as you all already know. Also no PCIE that I can see. Just got a USB case for the original HDD that I will use as external backup. So win-win.
