Hi! I've recently moved into a dorm room and for some reason my internet doesn't work. It works completely fine on my laptop but on my desktop it doesn't work. It does however show that it works, no yellow mark or anything, all troubleshoots and searches show that I'm connected but I can't connect to any webpages. I dont have acess to the router seeing as it's only the plug in the wall. I'm using a ethernet cable. Has to be on my end (I assume) seeing as it works when I have the cable connected to the laptop, but not on my desktop. I've been using my desktop with a cable for years back at home with it always working. Hope anyone can help.

Correct, it will pick up the MAC address of the laptop an assigned the IP to that address. See if there is another computer around you can test on your cable, see if that works or not. But either way, you are working with the school connection, so you should contact the school IT department since we have no way of checking the setup there.

Oh you think because I've had my laptop connected to it, it wont accept my desktop now? I only have one port though, like I'm not using two cables, one for my own desktop and one for my laptop.
