Old setup : analog tv, indoor antenna, converter box, got all 23 channels

New setup - vizio d24hng9, indoor antenna, only getting hald as many channels (local afiliate stations are in lower mH range but listed as high (uhf? Vhf?)

Is the tv runer unable ro scan that range? Or do i need a new antenna since im not using a converter box?

Solution
Yes you do want a better antenna; amplified indoor at least and amplified outdoor at best. You will find comparison reviews on the site.
All ATSC tuners are not created equal. Better tuner means higher retail price in an environment were cheaper is always more desirable.
Digital TV starts at about the old channel 9 and goes to all the way up.

I just got the Vizio D24F-f1 24" Smart TV - It is fantastic in some ways... great picture, connectivity, and streaming apps. As for the tuner, it's a big disapointment so far. (I'm using a Sony Bravia LCD TV with signal diagnostics on the same antenna as a reference.) First, The OTA channels in our area (physicial, not virtual), start at 5, then 10, 11, and 13, etc. The Sony receives all of these perfectly. The Vizio almost never "sees" channel 10 (50% strength) during a scan, but does fine with the others in this group (even though channel 13 has only 20% strength). I'm starting to conclude that the Vizio's tuner has poor selectivity, being unable to adequately distinguish adjacent frequencies. Second, there's a whole group of (virtual) channels between 19 and 36 that the Vizio apparen't detects during a scan (due to high channel count), but fails to allow access to after a scan. I believe it's because these channels are duplicates (repeater transmitters) of the remaining channels, so it brute-force hides them just to simplify things for the user. Third, the Vizio appears to be unable to accept a channel UP or DOWN button command for a few seconds after a channel change. This makes surfing through the channels painfully slow. I'm considering adding a dedicated Yagi-Uda antenna cut for channel 10. Otherwise, I might have to purchase a dedicated tuner with an HDMI output. So yes, these sets seem to have cheap tuners.
