As long as the laptop has enough space (on the drive) and enough RAM, you should be able to update it whenever you want. Try going to the Microsoft site and it should help you see if your device will be able to run it. Just a word of advice, don't install it if you 'barely' meet the system requirements. If you do, then it will seriously bog down the laptop.
