this is for mixing a usb headset mic (where the mic is going through an effect processor software on a laptop) with background music from another source in the laptop (youtube for example) and have ALL (both mic and youtube) sound come out of the audio jack on the laptop so that can then be plugged into my stereo receiver and use my large living room speakers. How can this be done? Every time I plug the headset in the audio jack cuts out.

You need to look at your default playback device.

When you plug your usb headset in, it becomes the default playback device.

Your application should let you select a playback device (by default it will use your default windows device).
Otherwise set your playback device. (right click on the little speaker icon)
