Connecting speakers to tv problem?

Hello, I have a problem connecting my TV to the speakers that I have. So I have a TCL UHD smart roku tv and I have a Yamaha yas-107 speaker. I have tried 2 different HDMI cables and plugged one end of the hdmi on the "out(arc)" of the speaker and "hdmi arc" on the tv. I've tried putting it "in" on the speaker and "out" on the tv. I've basically tried every possible combination connecting the hdmi cable but nothing seems output the tv sound to the speakers. The only way that's worked so far was connecting an optical tv cord to speaker and tv but it's just too annoying to keep having to turn on both the tv and the sound. Any suggestions? Thanks alot.

Solution
Just to go over the way it would usually work
1. Yamaha HDMI out to TV HDMI-ARC (this is actually an input that has extra wires that are used in the reverse direction to get audio from the TV to an AVR or soundbar). It allows for CEC which simplifies the operation which the optical connections doesn't and saves using an additional cable.
2. Turn on ARC and CEC in the TV menu.
3. Select ARC as the input on the soundbar.
4. Try it with TV speakers off. Try changing the audio output type in the TV menu.
If you can't get it working then use the optical cable and get a Logitech Harmony remote.

I've actually tried every possible combination of connections using the cable but it doesnt work.. in to out,out to in, in to non-are hdmi, you name it. The settings on the audio on the tv is on auto detection and I tried having the tv speakers enabled and disabled but nothing is working. Is there anything else you need to connect for the hdmi cable to work?

I might have to try the harmony remote because the HDMI would not work no matter what I do. I'll update this once I get it
