If it is going to the screen saver right away, then the laptop wasn't off, it was sleeping or in hibernate. You should be able to totally power it off. Not sleep or hibernate, and then start it up fresh. This should get you the log in screen, etc.

Then you may want to go and check your sleep and hibernation settings to make sure nothing was recently changed. Especially if there was an update to the system.

Lastly, if none of this still works, then try starting up the system in "Safe Mode". If it will load there, but not normally, then there maybe something on the device that could be the cause. Bad program, virus, malware, etc. You would have to remove the problem to get it to load up normally then.
