If I take my direct tv receiver and feed component cables to a radio shack rf converter 75 ohm coax then hook it to a old tv with only that signal input then why won't it work?

Solution
To clarify you connected the yellow RCA video and red and white RCA audio outputs of the DTV box to an RF converter.
The RF converter will output on either channel 3 or 4. Did you select that channel on the old TV?
If the DTV box has HDMI the AV outputs may not be active.
The RF converter could be bad.
