I just did a reformat and clean installation of Win7 Ultimate 64bit because I was having so many problems with Win 10. The reinstall is fine and I then downloaded and installed Avira Free. Installation was fine except that after the install when I click on the Avira icon to do an update it is telling me to install. I tried that by clicking on the install text but after the install it still comes up with install.
What is the problem and how do I get round it??

Did you try going into "Control Panel" and then "Programs and Features" and uninstall it from there. Then reboot (turn off and back on) the computer and try installing it again? There may have been a problem with the installation. That would be the best way to resolve it. Just make sure you turn the computer off and back on after the uninstall and before you reinstall.

Should it continue to give you this issue, you may want to contact Avira and see if they have a work around.
